A group of River Plate fans vented their frustration by insulting and spitting on Lional Messi, who came close to retaliating. The Barca star has always been cold-shouldered by a chunk of his countryman, who don't recognise him as one of their own. It look the intervention of Luis Enrique and other members of the Barca squad to prevent thing from escalating. Several members of the South American champion squad quickly condemned this abuse and called for more respect to be shown towards Messi, who even held up his hand apologetically after opening the scoring in the final.
